Why is Milk Thistle Holy?

Holy Thistle

Milk thistle is also known as St Mary Thistle, Lady’s Thistle and Holy Thistle and has been used for 2,000 years to treat liver disorders. Further, in 4th century B.C., Theorphrastus referred to milk thistle by the name of Pternix. Also, in 1744, Von Haller documented its medicinal use in the “Medizinischen Lexicon”.

Its name comes from the white fluid that appears when the leaves are crushed. It is also known as sillybum and sillybum is the active component of this herb.

Number One Herb

During the last ten decades, over 400 scientific studies of milk thistle have been catalogued. Therefore, it reflects the invaluable contribution milk thistle has to offer as an herbal remedy. In fact, milk thistle is the number one herb that comes highly recommended for liver health in particular. Further, doctors prescribe it as a treatment for mushroom poisoning, alcoholic cirrhosis, drug-induced liver damage, acute viral hepatitis and chronic hepatitis.

Powerful Yet Gentle

Milk thistle is gentle and non-toxic, though it may have a milk, short-term laxative effect for some users. Nevertheless, it’s safe for everyone, including pregnant and nursing mothers.

Active Ingredients

The active component and bioflavonoid complex contained in milk thistle is known as silymarin, which it is derived from the purified extract of the seeds of the plant. That’s where the medical benefits come from. Additionally, silymarin is composed of three main flavonoids:

  • silybin – or silibinin
  • silydianin – or silidianin
  • silychristin – or silicristin

Of these three flavonoids, silybin is the most biologically active and beneficial. It composes 50% – 70% of silymarin.
