WHAT IS MELATONIN 5000™?

Melatonin 5000™ is a dietary supplement designed to enhance restful sleep and promote relaxation and support a variety of functions within the body.

The pineal gland in the brain secretes the hormone Melatonin and Melatonin helps in the regulation of other hormones and maintains the body’s circadian rhythm. The circadian rhythm is an internal 24-hour time-keeping system that plays a critical role in determining when we fall asleep and when we wake up. Melatonin is usually secreted at night when we are asleep as it is darkness that stimulates the production of melatonin while light suppresses its activity. Exposure to excessive light in the evening or too little light during the day can disrupt the body’s normal melatonin cycle, common examples being jet lag or shift work. There is also a view from some experts that exposure to low-frequency electromagnetic fields (common in household appliances) may disrupt normal cycles and production of melatonin.

Melatonin also helps control the timing and release of female reproductive hormones. It helps determine when menstruation begins and ends and the frequency and duration of the menstrual cycle.

Many researchers also believe that melatonin levels are related to the aging process. Up until puberty the highest levels of nighttime melatonin is found in young children. Levels of melatonin diminish as we age which may explain why many older adults have disrupted sleep patterns and tend to go to bed and wake up earlier than when they were younger. In addition to its hormonal actions, melatonin has strong antioxidant effects far greater than Vitamin C or E plus certain evidence leads us to believe that it may help strengthen the immune system.

Exciting new evidence has emerged regarding the effect of Melatonin and age-related macular degeneration. In the elderly this condition is the leading cause of severe visual loss and the main cause of central vision loss (blindness). In clinical trials the conclusion was that melatonin supplementation among the aged population may be beneficial in preventing, relieving or reducing the severity of age related macular degeneration.

Pregnant or nursing women or those wishing to conceive should not use Melatonin nor those with severe allergies or autoimmune diseases including immune-system cancers such as lymphoma or leukemia and of course healthy children as they are already producing melatonin in abundance. Consult with your medical professional before taking.
