Your Gallbladder at Work
Every day, all day long, our body is working to detoxify itself. It’s constantly culling out the bad from the good. Then it eliminates toxins through the colon, liver, lungs, kidneys, lymph and skin. It’s a basic biological function of the house we live in. On the other hand, the gallbladder produces bile for digestion. Both your Liver and your Gallbladder make bile needed for Digestion.
Location of the Gallbladder
The gallbladder is found right beneath the liver within your torso. As part of the biliary system, it is associated with the production, storage and transportation of bile. It breaks up and digests fatty foods in the small intestine.
When there is pain in your gallbladder, it’s usually caused by biliary colic, cholecystitis, pancreatitis, cholangitis or gallstones.
What’s a Gallstone?
A gallstone is a mixture of bile salts, cholesterol and bilirubin. They can be as small as a grain of sand or as huge as a golf-ball.
We are able to live without a gallbladder because there are other routes in which bile can reach the small intestine. Gallstones can obstruct the gallbladder duct and prevent the bile from reaching the small intestine. This leads to further gallbladder maladies.
Gallbladder attacks (a sudden pain in the upper right side of the abdomen) occur soon after eating, especially after heavy meals. Their duration is from one to several hours or as little as a few minutes. Some symptoms of a gallbladder attack are: nausea, loss of appetite, vomiting, pain and possibly jaundice.
What to Avoid
Factors that contribute to gallstone risk are obesity, diets high in cholesterol or fat, diabetes and medicating with estrogen. People at risk are: Native Americans, Mexican-Americans, people over 60 and women.
If you want to do your gallbladder a favor, you should avoid sweeteners, refined carbs, sugar, frozen or canned fruits and vegetables (may contain additives that make the gallbladder work harder), white bread, pasta, potato chips, cookies, pies and almost any packaged food. Also, fried foods, fatty meat, whole milk and whole-milk products.
Additionally, a very low-calorie diet (less than 1,000 calories/day) can increase gallstone formation. Stick to whole grains, lean meats and fish, fiber-filled food and drink lots and lots of water –not alcohol.
